The Electric Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a small freshwater fish native to South America, Venezuela, and Colombia. They are known for their iridescent blue scales and bold personalities; their unique appearance and manageable size make them a favourite among aquarists.
Despite being a cichlid, they are relatively calm and can coexist with other species in a community tank. They thrive in smaller aquariums of 20 gallons or more. Rams are active swimmers who display captivating behaviour.
Water Temperature: 25–30°C (77–86°F). Water pH: 6.0–7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral). Hardness: soft-to-moderate
They prefer fine sand or smooth gravel to mimic their natural habitat. Live plants provide hiding spots and oxygenation. Include driftwood or rocks to provide shelter and replicate a riverbed environment. Moderate lighting will enhance their iridescent hues.
Electric Blue Rams are omnivores and prefer protein-rich diets. Feed them on a high-quality diet of flakes or pellets. Frozen or live foods, like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, will ensure their vibrant colour and overall health. Feed them small amounts twice daily to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality.
