Tiger Barbs are one of the most popular and instantly recognisable species known in the hobby. Originating from Borneo, they carry one of the worst reputations in fishkeeping. They are a shoaling species and because of their nature, it is recommended that they are kept in groups of 8 or more individuals to keep their squabbling contained within their own kind. Though they are not technically aggressive, they are very inquisitive and extremely social, so if they don't have the means to continuously work on their own social structure through sparring, they often turn to other tank mates and stress them out with their nipping. Tiger Barbs will take just about any food offered and tends to be a fast, greedy eater. Tank mates should be chosen carefully with similar temperaments, such as Buenos Aires Tetra and mid-sized semi aggressive cichlids. Delicate, mild mannered and long fin species should be avoided altogether.
